Instructions
- Turn on the Instant Pot to SAUTE mode
- Wait until the Instant Pot display reads “HOT”
- Add oil to the steel pot
- Add the rye (mustard seeds) and jeeru (cumin seeds)
- Allow to sizzle for 30 seconds
- Add the hing (asafoetida) to the oil
- Add the dry red chilies
- Allow to sizzle for 30 seconds
- Add the curry leaves - BE CAREFUL as they will splatter
- Press CANCEL on the Instant Pot
- Add in the tomatoes
- Add in the toovar daal (pidgeon pea lentils)
- Add in the ginger, green chilies, turmeric, red chili powder, salt
- Mix well to incorporate all ingredients
- Add 2 cups water
- Mix to make sure nothing is stuck to the bottom of the pot
- Close and lock the lid on the Instant Pot
- Turn the vent to sealing to prevent steam from escaping
- Press CANCEL on the Instant Pot
- Press MANUAL on the Instant Pot (high pressure)
- Set timer to 15 minutes
- Make the dumpling dough while the daar cooks:
- To the wheat flour in a mixing bowl, add the spices:
- Add sesame seeds, turmeric, salt, red chili powder, cumin seeds and garlic
- Drizzle oil into the flour
- Using your hands, massage all ingredients into the flour
- In small increments, add water to form a firm dough
- Knead the dough until it comes together and coat with oil
- Divide the dough into 3 or 4 balls
- Sprinkle all purpose flour on to your rolling surface
- Roll the dough into a ¼ inch thin round using a rolling pin
- Using a pizza cutter, cut the dumplings into diamond shapes
- Set aside the diamond shaped dumplings until the daar gravy is done
- Once the timer goes off, allow the pressure to Naturally Release for at least 10 minutes
- Manually release the steam by opening the vent
- The silver prong will drop back into the lid BE CAREFUL OF THE HOT STEAM
- Press CANCEL on the Instant Pot
- Open the lid to see that the lentils are soft
- You may remove the dry red chilies before blending
- Using your hand blender, blend up the daar to get a smooth consistency
- Add extra water to the daar gravy if you want a thinner gravy
- To the gravy, add lemon juice, brown sugar and peanuts
- Mix well
- Gently add in the diamond shaped dough into the daar gravy
- Gently stir to ensure the dough doesn’t stick together
- Press CANCEL on the Instant Pot
- Press MANUAL on the Instant Pot (high pressure)
- Set timer to 2-4 minutes (4 minutes will give you extra soft dough dumplings)
- Once the timer goes off, manually release the steam by opening the vent
- The silver prong will drop back into the lid BE CAREFUL OF THE HOT STEAM
- Press CANCEL on the Instant Pot
- Carefully open the lid
- Garnish with cilantro
- Serve and enjoy!
